Saint Francis Drops League Opener to Marian

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) baseball team opened Crossroads League action with a split-series against Marian University on February 27-28.

The Cougars came up short in a four-game series against the Knights, dropping contests by scores of 17-0, 11-5, 13-3, and 13-1.

MARIAN 17, SAINT FRANCIS 10

  • Marian used a big early offensive push in the first three innings to take a 13-0 lead.
  • Saint Francis exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning, stringing together walks and timely hits to cut the Knights' lead to 16-8. 
  • The Cougars' rally would fall short as Marian secured the 17-10 game one victory.
  •  SF recorded eight hits and 12 walks. Ayden Lichtensteiger went 2-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Andrew ZellersXavier Nolan, Steven Drewyor, AJ Patton and Zavier Edgar all drove in runs for the Cougars. 
  • On the mound, Perry Stow was credited for the loss after throwing 1.2 innings, striking out two batters and allowing six hits. Jacob Bardwell, Micah Steury and Luke Wessell combined for eight strikeouts and five hits in relief. 

MARIAN 11, SAINT FRANCIS 5 - 7 INNINGS

  • Marian started game two strong, plating five runs in the top of the first inning. 
  • The Cougars responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, while capitalizing on a wild pitch to score two runs to close the gap. 
  • A two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning brought the game within one run, with the score at 5-4 in favor of MU. 
  • Marian scored four runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 9-4. The game was suspended after the sixth inning due to darkness. 
  • Play resumed in Indianapolis on Saturday ahead of the originally scheduled doubleheader between the Cougars and Knights. 
  • Marian added two runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 11-4. 
  • Saint Francis used an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to try to put together a rally, but Marian held on to win game two 11-5. 
  • The Cougars had four hits and four walks in game two. Nolan hit 3-2 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Lichtensteiger went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Kasen Oribello also drove in a run, while Zellers had a stolen base. 
  • Luke Siren struck out eight batters while giving up seven hits in 5.0 innings as the Cougars' starting pitcher. Bryce Adams and Matthew Roettger held MU to two hits in 1.0 innings pitched each in relief. 

MARIAN 13, SAINT FRANCIS 3 - 7 INNINGS 

  • Saint Francis got the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. 
  • Marian hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up 2-2. 
  • An RBI single up the middle from Tyler Bach in the top of the fifth put the Cougars back on top 3-2. 
  • The Knights' offense scored 11 more runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings while keeping Saint Francis off the board to secure the 13-3 win in seven innings. 
  • The Cougars finished with six hits and three walks. Bach went 2-4 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored. Lichtensteiger also had an extra base hit, while Nolan and Drewyor also drove in one run apiece. 
  • Jayden Nuber struck out six batters with three walks and six hits in 5.1 innings on the mound. Dawson French, Cameron Alford and Brock Bowser held Marian to two hits while striking out a pair of batters in relief. 

MARIAN 13, SAINT FRANCIS 1 - 7 INNINGS

  • The Knights jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through the first three innings of Saturday's second game. 
  • Saint Francis drove in a run in the top half of the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Edgar to center field. 
  • Marian added four more runs in the fifth inning en route to the 13-1 win. 
  • The Cougars were held to three hits, with Nolan and Zellers both finishing with doubles and Edgar recording an RBI. 
  • Jaden Markus was credited with the loss after tossing 2.0 innings, striking out a batter while giving up six hits and two walks. 

Up next, Saint Francis (2-14, 0-4 CL) will continue league play with a four-game series against Mount Vernon Nazarene University at home on March 6-7.
