MT. VERNON, Ohio - The No. 7 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's basketball team opened Crossroads League play with a commanding 86-50 win at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday, November 19.
Saint Francis began Wednesday night's game with a strong 10-0 run and outscored Mount Vernon Nazarene 20-12 in the first quarter, establishing an early lead. MVNU responded in the second quarter, cutting SF's advantage to just one point, with the score at 22-21 at the 8:08 mark. However, the SF Cougars pulled ahead by eight points with just under six minutes remaining in the quarter. Saint Francis ended the first half with a 16-2 run, taking a 45-26 lead at halftime.
The Cougars carried their momentum into the second half, adding 21 points to their total for a 66-44 lead. SF held MVNU to only six points in the fourth quarter, securing their seventh consecutive win and improving their record to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. With the loss, Mount Vernon Nazarene falls to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the CL.
The SF Cougars shot 50.8% (32-63) from the field while shooting 46.7% (7-15) from three-point range. Saint Francis outscored Mount Vernon Nazarene 46-22 in the paint while scoring 31 points off turnovers. Taylor Fordyce, Isabella Gizzi and Cali Gregory each scored 15 points during Wednesday night's game. Fordyce also finished with a team-high six rebounds. Renna Schwieterman finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Julia Mantyla added three assists and two blocked shots, while Samiyah Stout dished out four assists.
Up next, Saint Francis (7-0, 1-0) will host Grace College in the Cougars' first home Crossroads League matchup of the season on Saturday, November 22. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Hutzell Athletic Center.
