Cougars Go 3-1 in Road Series at Goshen
GOSHEN, Ind. The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) Cougars picked up three wins in a four-game series at Goshen College on Saturday, April 25. The Cougars won game one 21-9 in eight innings before edging the Maple Leafs in game two 2-1. Goshen earned a walk-off win in game three, with Saint Francis responding with a 9-5 win in game four.
SAINT FRANCIS 21, GOSHEN 9 - 8 INNINGS
- After Saint Francis drove in three runs in the top of the first inning, Goshen responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-3 lead.
- With the score at 7-4 in favor of Goshen, the Cougars responded with a big fourth inning, driving in 11 runs to retake the lead.
- Saint Francis added six more runs in the fifth and eighth innings to secure the 21-9 run-rule victory.
- The Cougars recorded 15 hits while drawing 12 walks in game one. Jack Belschner went 4-5 at the plate with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Kasen Oribello had a home run and four RBI, while Xavier Nolan, Ayden Lichtensteiger, Jordan Davis and AJ Patton all had extra-base hits and combined for seven RBI.
- Luke Siren got the win after throwing 2.0 innings of relief, striking out three batters while holding the Maple Leafs to two hits. Perry Stow earned the save after striking out six batters in 3.0 innings on the mound.
SAINT FRANCIS 2, GOSHEN 1 - 7 INNINGS
- A ground-out RBI in the top of the second put Saint Francis on top 1-0.
- An RBI single in the top of the fourth extended the Cougars' lead to 2-0.
- Goshen tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth, using a solo home run to cut SF's lead to 2-1, but the Cougars held off the Maple Leafs for the 2-1 win.
- Saint Francis had four hits and four walks in game two. Zavier Edgar hit 2-3 with a triple, while Owen Zimmerman and Patton each drove in a run and had a stolen base.
- Curtis Ellis threw the complete game, striking out 11 batters while holding Goshen to four hits and one earned run.
GOSHEN 7, SAINT FRANCIS 6
- Goshen struck first in game three, plating a run on a wild pitch for the early 1-0 lead.
- The Cougars brought in two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Maple Leafs responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to make the score 3-2 in favor of Goshen.
- After Goshen extended their lead to 5-2 in the seventh inning, Saint Francis retook the lead with four runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
- Goshen hit a two-run home run down the right field line for the walk-off win.
- Saint Francis finished with five hits and drew six walks in game three. Belschner went 2-3 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored. Lichtensteiger, Davis, Oribello and Cole Kintz all drove in a run for the Cougars.
- On the mound, Dawson French got the start, striking out a pair of batters while giving up one hit and two walks through 2.0 innings. Jayden Nuber struck out five batters in relief, while Micah Stuery took the loss after throwing 1.2 innings, striking out three batters and giving up two runs.
SAINT FRANCIS 9, GOSHEN 5 - 7 INNINGS
- Saint Francis jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning.
- Goshen cut the Cougars' lead to one after scoring four runs in the first and fourth innings.
- An RBI single and home run in the fifth and seventh innings pushed SF's lead to 9-4.
- Saint Francis held off Goshen in the seventh inning to secure the 9-5 win.
- The Cougars had 10 hits and three walks in game four. Oribello went 2-3 at the plate with his fifth home run of the season and three RBI. Andrew Zellers went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base. Xavier Nolan andZimmerman also drove in a run.
- Andrew Onuegbu earned the win on the mound after throwing 3.0 innings in relief with a strikeout.
Saint Francis baseball concludes the regular season with an overall record of 20-29 and a league record of 18-18. The Cougars have secured the No. 5 seed in the Crossroads League Tournament and will face the No. 8-seeded Pilots of Bethel University on Wednesday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m.
