Saint Francis Drops Doubleheader at No. 1 Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) traveled to take on the nation's top-ranked Taylor University squad in a doubleheader. The Cougars fell in both contests, dropping game one 22-3 and game two 11-3.

#1 TAYLOR 22, SAINT FRANCIS 3 - 7 INNINGS

  • Saint Francis struck first, plating two runs in the opening inning and adding another in the fifth, but Taylor's explosive offense quickly took control.
  • Taylor responded with a 10-run first inning and never looked back, piling up 22 runs on 13 hits.
  • The Cougars recorded seven hits and four walks in Monday's first game. Cole Kintz went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Andrew Zellers and Jordan Davis each drove in runs for the Cougars. Jack Belschner and Xavier Nolan each recorded hits, with Nolan also swiping a base.
  • On the mound for SF, Jayden Nuber was credited with the loss as the starter. Luke Wessell provided key relief, tossing 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.

  • The Cougars tried to rally in game two, but a big middle innings surge by Taylor proved to be the difference.
  • Taylor broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning and added insurance late to secure the sweep.
  • Saint Francis finished with five hits and a pair of walks. Ashten Tuttle hit 2-3 with a home run, a double and an RBI. Kintz put together another multi-hit game, including a home run, and two RBIs.
  • On the mound, Dawson French took the loss as the starter and struck out three over 4.0 innings. Zellers and Curtis Ellis combined for three strikeouts in relief.

Up next for the Cougars, Saint Francis (12-24, 10-14 CL) will look to bounce back quickly as they hit the road again, traveling to Madonna University to take on the Crusaders on April 7. First pitch will be at 3:00 p.m. in Livonia, Mich.
