Cougars out Coug SAU with a 2-0 Sweep
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- On Monday afternoon, The University of Saint Francis Cougars (14-16, 9-9 Crossroads League) took on the University of Spring Arbor Cougars (12-11, 7-11 Crossroads League) winning both games of the series 13-3 and 7-5.
In the first game of the series, Riley Perlich took the mound for the Cougars to start. Things got off to a rocky start for the Cougars, as they gave up two early RBIs in the 1st going down 0-2. The Cougars rallied back quickly off a Sam Pesa sacrifice fly and Nick Parsons hit by pitch to tie the game 2-2. Spring Arbor would respond with a solo homerun in the 3rd to go up 2-3, but this would be the last bit of offense they mustered.
From here, the Cougars offense had a dominate series, scoring 5 singles, a sacrifice fly, and scoring 2 runs off errors making it 10-3 in the 4th inning. Then, Nick Parsons exploded with a 2-run homerun making it 12-3, and Jose Valdez would take advantage of errors in the SAU field making it 13-3 in the 6th inning. After this, the Cougars defense dominated to close out the series with a 13-3 win in 7 innings.
In the second game of the series, Blaine McRae took the mound to start for the Cougars. David Miller would open the game with a bang, hitting a single to make it 1-0. Spring Arbor frustrated from the offensive beatdown last game, responded fast with a sacrifice fly and scoring off an error to make it 2-1 in the 2nd inning.
The Cougars offense got cooking again as they scored off a balk, 2 sacrifice singles, and an RBI making it 6-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Casey Henry came in for the save, pitching 5.1 innings & tallying 4 strikeouts, securing the win on the mound for the Cougs.
Then, a Noah Mack sacrifice fly would be the last bit of offense from the Cougars making it 7-2 in the 5th. Spring Arbor would rally back with a big answer off a 3-run homerun making it 5-7 in the 7th, but the Cougar defense would shutdown everything after this. The Cougars secured the second game with a 7-5 victory and a win in the 4-game series.
The Cougars next road series will be Wednesday April 5th against The Marian University Knights with a 1pm first pitch.
