Women's Soccer Falls Short at Mount Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's soccer team traveled to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a Crossroads League match on Saturday, October 4. MVNU won the match by a final score of 2-1 to improve to 7-3-2, 2-2-0 CL. 

Saint Francis struck early in the first half, with freshman Gwen Laurent scoring an unassisted goal in the 9th minute to grab a 1-0 lead. SF goalkeeper Rachel Bova made five saves in the first half to keep MVNU off the board as SF went into halftime up 1-0.

In the second half of action, MVNU was able to find the equalizer at the 57:53 mark. Mount Vernon Nazarene found the back of the net again in the 64th minute off a long-range shot to give MVNU the 2-1 lead. Despite creating chances and outshooting their opponent 10-9 in the second half, the SF Cougars were unable to net another goal as the score remained 2-1 in favor of MVNU at the final whistle. 

Saint Francis took 19 total shots during the match, with nine of those shots landing in frame for SF. Haylee Heflin led with three shots on goal, followed by Grace Hein and Haleigh Wesley with two each. Bova faced 11 shots on goal, making nine saves against MVNU. The SF offense put pressure on the MVNU goalkeeper, forcing Hannah Miller to make eight saves on Saturday. 

Up next, SF women's soccer (6-5-1, 0-4-0 CL) will return to Bishop John M. D'Arcy Stadium for a home league matchup against Huntington University on Saturday, October 11.
