FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The (RV) University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader with Huntington University on Tuesday, April 21, at Westendorf Field. The Foresters took game one 5-2 in eight innings before the Cougars rallied for a 9-5 win in game two.
With the victory, Saint Francis improved to 31-9 on the season, marking the most wins in a single season in program history.
HUNTINGTON 5, (RV) SAINT FRANCIS 2
- Saint Francis and Huntington played through two scoreless innings before the Foresters broke through with an RBI single in the third to take the early lead.
- Macie Dowd led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to right field, tying the game at 1-1 and forcing extra innings.
- Huntington responded with four runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead.
- The Cougars applied pressure on the bases in the bottom half and plated a run on an RBI walk, but the Foresters held on for the 5-2 win.
- Saint Francis totaled five hits and drew five walks in game one. Sam Baker went 2-4 with a double and a stolen base, while Dowd recorded her seventh home run of the season. Madyson Minnich also drove in a run.
- In the circle, Ellie Sauder tossed a complete game, striking out three while allowing 10 hits over 8.0 innings.
(RV) SAINT FRANCIS 9, HUNTINGTON 5
- Saint Francis struck first in game two, capitalizing on a Huntington error and an RBI walk to take a 2-0 lead after three innings.
- The Foresters answered with four runs in the fourth to pull ahead 4-2.
- After the Foresters added another run in the fifth inning to extend their lead, the Cougars responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run, a two-run double, and an error to regain the lead.
- Saint Francis used an RBI single, an RBI walk, and a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 9-5 in the sixth inning.
- The Cougars held Huntington scoreless over the final two innings to secure the win and earn the doubleheader split.
- Saint Francis recorded eight hits and drew seven walks in game two. Baker went 2-4 with a triple, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Abby Robakowski went 1-for-1 with her NAIA-leading 21st home run of the season and drew three walks. Kortney Surber had an extra-base hit and two RBI, while Paiton Iliff, Haylee Schott, Lena Viggiano, and Dowd each drove in a run.
- In the circle, Olivia Fuentes earned the complete-game victory, allowing six hits while striking out one.
Up next, the Cougars (31-9, 27-5) will host Taylor University for a Crossroads League doubleheader on Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m. in their final regular-season home games at Westendorf Field.
