FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team earned a Crossroads League doubleheader sweep over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday, March 20. The SF Cougars picked up a 6-5 extra-inning win in game one before rallying for a 5-4 victory in game two.
SAINT FRANCIS 6, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 5 - 8 INNINGS
- Mount Vernon Nazarene got on the scoreboard first with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in Friday's opening game.
- MVNU added another home run in the third inning to extend its lead to 5-0.
- A sacrifice fly put the SF Cougars on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- Saint Francis took advantage of an error and a pair of walks to plate four runs in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game and forcing extra innings.
- After holding MVNU scoreless in the top of the eighth, Macie Dowd delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to give Saint Francis a 6-5 walk-off victory.
- The SF Cougars recorded six hits and eight walks in game one. Madyson Minnich went 2-3 at the plate with a double, a triple and a run scored. Bree Miller drove in three runs, while Dowd added the game-winning RBI. Sam Baker stole three bases.
- In the circle, Ellie Sauder struck out one batter while allowing four hits in 3.0 innings as the starter. Olivia Fuentes earned the win after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits.
SAINT FRANCIS 5, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE 4
- After Mount Vernon Nazarene grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Abby Robakowski hit a solo home run in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 2-1.
- MVNU added two more runs in the third and fifth innings to extend its lead to 4-1.
- Robakowski hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, followed by an RBI from Fuentes to bring the SF Cougars within one.
- With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Robakowski hit an RBI triple to tie the game at 4-4. Dowd followed with an RBI single to center field to drive in the winning run, securing the doubleheader sweep for Saint Francis.
- SF finished with 10 hits and three walks in game two. Robakowski went 3-4 at the plate with two home runs, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Dowd also went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Minnich finished 2-3 with a double, while Baker and Joanna Geremesz each added a stolen base.
- In the circle, Fuentes earned her second win of the day after allowing two hits and one run over 3.0 innings of relief.
Up next, Saint Francis (9-5, 5-1 CL) will host Indiana Wesleyan University for a league doubleheader on Saturday, March 21. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. at Westendorf Field.
