Cougars Sweep Maple Leafs in League Opener
GOSHEN, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) softball team swept Goshen College in a Crossroads League doubleheader on Tuesday, March 10, earning 12-2 and 7-0 victories.
SAINT FRANCIS 12, GOSHEN 2 - 6 INNINGS
- Goshen got on the scoreboard first with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings on a home run and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Cougars responded in the top of the third, capitalizing on an error while using a double and a single to drive in four runs and take a 4-2 advantage.
- Three more Goshen errors in the fourth and fifth innings allowed Saint Francis to bring in two runs to extend its lead to 6-2.
- Saint Francis kept the momentum in the sixth inning with an RBI single to left field, followed by a home run to left-center field to extend the lead and secure the 10-run victory.
- The Cougars recorded 10 hits and six walks in game one. Haylee Schott and Kortney Surber both went 2-3 at the plate. Schott finished with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Surber also drove in a run. Lillian Pierce recorded four RBI and hit her first home run of the season. Paiton Iliff and Bree Miller each added an RBI.
- In the circle, Ellie Sauder struck out three batters while allowing five hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Olivia Fuentes recorded three strikeouts and allowed no hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
SAINT FRANCIS 7, GOSHEN 0
- Sam Baker stole third base before scoring on a throwing error in the top of the first inning to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
- Saint Francis used an RBI single and a two-run double in the second inning to extend its lead to 4-0.
- A single to shortstop and a two-run double in the third and fifth innings helped SF extend the lead to 7-0.
- The Cougars kept Goshen off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the shutout and complete the sweep of the Maple Leafs.
- Saint Francis finished with eight hits and a pair of walks in game two. Baker and Lena Viggiano both went 2-for-2 at the plate, combining for five RBI and each hitting a double. Macie Dowd and Pierce also recorded extra-base hits, while Emma Howdeshell added an RBI.
- Olivia Fuentes earned the win in the circle after striking out seven batters while allowing three hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Schott recorded two strikeouts and allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
Up next, Saint Francis (6-4, 2-0 CL) will continue league play with a road doubleheader at Bethel University on March 13.
